Proposal

All the houses on this street are built in the same style, with the same layout, which includes a small room on the first floor, adjacent to the top of the stairs. The roof is so low over this room,  it is not possible to stand up and so the room can be used for little more than ad hoc storage.

 

To transform the room into a home office, much needed since working from home became an everyday occurrence following the Covid lockdown, a dormer has been added. The room is now a valued space; offering a private place to work even when the rest of the family are at home. 

 

Front facing dormers require planning permission and can be met with resistance from the Planning department. As such the dormer has been sensitively designed; the form with a pitched roof is in keeping with the style of the existing house; the modest size makes the addition subservient to the original property; and the proposed material palette of plain clay hung tiles also reflects that of the original house, and of the immediate context.

Having seen the construction take place and the resulting benefit to the house, a similar dormer is now being constructed on a neighbouring house.
